The Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has condemned the extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old musician, Oghenemine Ogidi, by a police officer in Effurun.
Oborevwori, in a statement issued on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, said he received news of the killing with deep shock, stressing that no citizen deserves to be subjected to such brutality.
He described the act as barbaric and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life.
“The killing of Mena Ogidi by ASP Nuhu Usman is unwarranted, unprovoked and barbaric. It is unlawful and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life,” the governor said.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, reaffirming that the safety and dignity of every citizen remain paramount under his administration.
“No citizen deserves to be subjected to such brutality and death. The protection of lives remains paramount under my administration,” he added.
The governor commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for the swift and decisive disciplinary actions taken, including the approval of the dismissal and prosecution of the officers found culpable—a decision forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
He assured that the state government would closely monitor the case to its conclusion, support the family of the deceased, and remain committed to upholding the rule of law and promoting a just and humane Delta State.
PUNCH Metro reports that the incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to the Area Command in Effurun received intelligence about Ogidi, who was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
ASP Nuhu Usman, who led the team, allegedly discharged his firearm, leading to the suspect’s death.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved the dismissal and criminal prosecution of the officers involved in the fatal shooting.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the police said the decision followed the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings into the April 26, 2026, incident that led to the death of 28-year-old Mena Ogidi.
