Secret Invasion startles straight out of the gate with Skrull ploy and heartbreaking Maria moment

Why do the Skrulls want Earth and does Maria die in Secret Invasion? HITC explains.

A colossal chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has commenced with the beginning of Phase Five, which has recently introduced itself with both Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.

However, Phase Four proved that the shows are just as essential as the movies, so checking out Secret Invasion, the first series of the latest phase on Disney+, is absolutely imperative for the fandom.

Created by Kyle Bradstreet and focusing on Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic Nick Fury, the former SHIELD director is tasked with defending Earth from an invasion orchestrated by the Skrulls, a race of reptilian humanoids.

With this as the focus, a question demands to be addressed: Why do the Skrulls want Earth? Additionally, does Maria die in Secret Invasion?

Why do the Skrulls want Earth?

Nick is called to Earth and away from SABER after learning that a faction of Skrulls has plotted and is now orchestrating a covert invasion of his home planet. The reason they are attempting to claim Earth for themselves is that their own homeworld was obliterated by the cosmic entity Galactus.

In search of somewhere else they can control and call home, they landed on Earth because they believe it to be truly theirs and not humanity’s.

Nick discovers that the extremist group of Skrulls has already been abducting and taking the form of important political figures, ushering in further steps that will ensure they cannot be stopped.

This is where the series takes its name, and Nick is determined to put a stop to their plans. However, he must first discover who among his inner circle he can trust; who around him is really themselves and not a Skrull in disguise?

WARNING: SECRET INVASION EPISODE 1 ENDING SPOILERS

Does Maria die in Secret Invasion?

Yes, Maria dies at the very end of the introductory episode. Gravik cruelly bombs Moscow on Unity Day and Vossoyedineniye Square is plunged into chaos amid fiery explosions.

Many people die in the blast, but Maria is killed by Gravik, who has deceptively taken the form of Nick, somebody she trusts. She walks over to him and is shot in the stomach before taking a fall.

The real Nick later rushes to her assistance and she tells him that he did it. Realizing what has happened, Nick assures her that it wasn’t him just before she takes her last breath. The final shot is of Maria’s dead body, and we linger long enough to confirm that she isn’t a Skrull.

With just one installment, Secret Invasion has established very high stakes.

‘It’s the most depth I’ve been able to show’

Cobie Smulders (who plays Maria) was recently interviewed by TVLine and weighed in on how pleased she was with Secret Invasion’s approach to her character:

“It’s the most depth I’ve been able to show of Maria Hill. That’s the beauty of these series that Marvel is doing, you’re able to really get backstory of these characters. What are the conversations that happen when they’re just sitting around drinking coffee?”

She added: “It’s not like, ‘We’ve gotta get the bad guys! We’ve gotta get the thing! We’ve gotta save the world again!’ It’s like, ‘Let’s just have a chat, let’s go for a walk.’ We get to see those kinds of moments and be a bit more intimate with the characters.”

Secret Invasion is streaming exclusively on Disney+.
