OB3 pipeline successfully crosses River Niger, linking eastern and western gas networks
Project to unlock 500 million cubic feet of additional gas supply daily
NNPC says milestone will strengthen power generation and industrial growth
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has announced the successful completion of the River Niger crossing of the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) gas pipeline, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s energy infrastructure development.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the company said the achievement was delivered through its subsidiary, the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, describing it as a critical step in strengthening national gas connectivity.

The 130-kilometre OB3 pipeline, with a capacity of two billion standard cubic feet per day, is designed to link the eastern and western gas networks while also extending supply to the northern region through the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano pipeline corridor.

According to the company, the project is expected to significantly improve domestic gas availability in the short term.
“In the near term, the successful crossing is expected to unlock over 500 million standard cubic feet of incremental gas supply for the domestic market, supporting power generation, industrial growth, and gas supply to the West African market,” the statement noted.
Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the development as a landmark achievement for the country’s energy sector.
“The completion of the OB3 River Niger Crossing is a defining milestone for Nigeria’s gas infrastructure and a clear demonstration of what disciplined execution and sustained commitment to excellence can deliver,” he said.
He added that overcoming the technical challenges associated with the River Niger crossing has strengthened the reliability of gas supply across the country.
“By successfully traversing one of the most technically challenging sections of the project, we have unlocked a critical link that will enhance gas supply reliability, deepen domestic utilisation, and support power generation and industrial growth across the country,” Ojulari stated.
The NNPC boss noted that the milestone builds on previous engineering successes, including the AKK River Niger crossing completed in 2025, highlighting the company’s growing technical and execution capacity in complex infrastructure projects.
Industry observers say the completion of the OB3 pipeline crossing is expected to play a key role in improving energy security, boosting industrial productivity, and supporting Nigeria’s transition towards a gas-powered economy.
